(KRON) -- A coyote that has been spotted nearly two dozen times in east Petaluma over the past two weeks does not appear aggressive and is "engaging in normal wildlife activity," officials said. The Petaluma Police Department said it's received more than 20 calls about the animal.

Wildlife Rescue has advised police that the coyote appears healthy and is native to the area.

"Based on this assessment, the coyote does not currently pose a known threat to public safety," said police.

Coyotes are a natural part of the ecosystem and "seeing a coyote in a residential neighborhood does not necessarily indicate a danger to the community," police added. Police are asking residents not to contact police, animal control or wildlife rescue to report additional sightings of the coyote, unless it displays aggressive or threatening behavior toward people.
