The anonymous Thursday letter, “Voting Republican will be a brake against Democrats’ extremism,” from a “retired attorney” in Westlake was, to put it kindly, bizarre.
There is nothing undemocratic about wanting to see the Electoral College abolished. The Electoral College is an undemocratic institution whose only purpose is to increase the weight of certain voters (those in smaller states) over others. Among modern presidential democracies, the United States is unique in using an Electoral College to select its president. Other democracies follow the straightforward principle of “majority rule.”
